It is a descriptor for all birds of that type (Herons, Cranes, etc.).

LaXayEm Tony,

I have just a little question: "yuLqat thiya7wit" refers to the blue
heron in particular or means "heron" in general? (are there several
species of herons in the area?)

Hayu masi,

Francisc

I've never seen a specific word for this bird, either. Not sure
why there is not one, but perhaps this bird lacked usefulness in a CJ
context?

The only CJ expression referring (also) to the heron I found in
"The Chinook Book" of W.S. Phillips ("El Comancho"), under the heading
KULLAKULLA:

"Siah lepee kullakulla mitlite copo chuck illahee," "A long
legged bird that-lives-in the water-land (swamps)." (The crane, snipe or
heron.)

But I don't know about any specific denomination for the blue
heron.
