<p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva" color="#cccc99">The Métis people are not only a mix of two diverse races, but also a combination of their distinct cultures. As such, Métis people developed their own language using pieces from both their European and First Nations parents. Michif is the result of a marriage between French and Cree. It uses French nouns and noun phrases with the Plains Cree verb system. As the language moves east, it begins to incorporate the Ojibway language.<br>
<br>
Today, Michif is spoken by only a small percentage of the community and is currently being researched and preserved by Métis Nations across the Homeland in a bid to rescue an important part of our heritage. In 1998, the Métis National Council received funding through Heritage Canada to begin work on the preservation of the Michif language.<br>
<br>
The MNC is playing a coordinating role on the national level with the governing member organizations. The working group consists of one technical person from each provincial affiliate organization who will work on Michif language retention.<br>
<br>
The MNC has brought Norman Fleury (renowned Michif language educator) on board to assist the working group in its endeavours. The intent is to have a web site for the Michif language and to produce CD ROMS containing a dictionary, phrases, and sound bites and to make the CD ROM available to educational institutions and to the Métis Nation.<br>
<br>
Director of Culture and Heritage/Language Initiatives, Ed Swain, remarked, "We want to make sure that we standardize the language so that the phonetics are captured. Each governing member organization has their own initiatives but we are all sharing information so that there is no duplication."</font></p>
