known Bill Seaburg for some time, and at times been able to<BR>help him. I
have the book, and hope others will get it or at least<BR>read it, as you
advise. There is a good deal more to be done<BR>in recognition of Native
Americans who have been 'intellectuals<BR> of their culture, carrying it on
and working within it.<BR>Victoria Howard, as you probably know, is such a one
for<BR>Clackamas. And a source of Chinook Jargon texts in her<BR>work with

I have it but have only glanced through it. Have you looked up<BR>Seaburg's
dissertation (COLLECTING CULTURE: THE PRACTICE AND IDEOLOGY<BR>OF SALVAGE
ETHNOGRAPHY IN WESTERN OREGON, 1877-1942 (FIELD WORK,<BR>NATIVE AMERICANS).
SEABURG, WILLIAM RONALD, PHD. UNIVERSITY OF<BR>WASHINGTON, 1994. 325 pp.,
available at UMI)? I think his critique of<BR>anthropological field research in
his dissertation is necessary for<BR>understanding some of the deeper background
of the Youst and Seaburg<BR>book. <BR><BR>BTW, the Chinook Jargons of Siletz and
Grand Ronde would logically be<BR>very similar, there was a lot of intermarriage
between Indians of both<BR>reservations and the initial populations were
basically from the same<BR>cultures. The few exceptions would be the Alseas,
Tillamooks and any<BR>other latecomers. For one example of intermarriage, the
late Ila Dowd<BR>was married to a Dowd from the Siletz reservation. As well,
there are<BR>Merciers and Hudsons from the same root families, on
both<BR>reservations. </FONT></FONT></DIV>

Wishington<BR>Howard another family member) was also excellent work and its hard
