Lulu Island is Musqueam/Cowichan territory (and I think also the New
West, Coquitlam and Katzie Bands) The communities that we now call
Sto:lo do not extend past the abbotsford/langley boundary.<br>
<br>
Lulu island seems to have been an important point where the halkomelam
from the island the the lower mainland overlapped (and gathered?)<br>

<div>Hi Bernard, List members,</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Walbran says this of Lulu Island: "Named, in 1862, by Colonel
Moody, R.E., in command of a detachment of the Royal Engineers then
stationed at New Westminster, after Lulu Sweet, a young actress
belonging to the first theatrical troupe that ever acted in that city.
Her conduct, acting and graceful manners gave great satisfaction, and
were appreciated to such an extend by her friends and patrons that the
island was named after her.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Does the island show up on the Sto:lo atlas? I don't have a
copy. Or is it in Musqueam territory?</div>

The word Lulu</div>
<div><br>
</div>
I presume than that the name for the island Richmond BC sits on comes<br>
from the Chinook word lu'lu (Lulu island) Can anyone confirm this<br>
and explain why? The name for the island is rarely used as the<br>
city of Richmond takes up most of the island.<br>
