PASCAL Workshop on Learning Methods for Text Understanding and Mining

January 26-29, 2004
Xerox Research Centre Europe
Meylan (Grenoble), France

IMPORTANT DATES
---------------

* Registration deadline: January 7, 2004

INTRODUCTION
------------

PASCAL (Pattern Analysis, Statistical Modelling and Computational
Learning) is the name of a Network of Excellence sponsored by the
European Union as part of its IST program. It brings together
experts from basic research areas such as Statistics, Optimisation
and Computational Learning and from a number of application areas,
with the objective of integrating research agendas and improving the
state of the art in all concerned fields.

As part of its activities, the PASCAL network organises a workshop
on the subject of "Learning Methods for Text Understanding and
Mining". The aim of the workshop is twofold:
- Introducing to experts in statistics, computational learning and
optimization problems issuing from text understanding and mining
which are both relevant and suitable to be tackled within their
framework;
- Proposing "challenges" (i.e.: concrete benchmark tasks) that will
help measuring improvements in the state of the art.

THE WORKSHOP
------------

In order to achieve these objectives, the Workshop will be organised
as follows:

- Jan 26 (afternoon only): Pre-workshop: Presentation of the results
of the EU IST project KerMIT ("Kernel Methods for Images and Text",
  http://www.euro-kermit.org).

- Jan 27: Tutorials
	- Machine Learning applied to Text Analysis: Overview (E. Gaussier)
	- Memory-based Language Processing (W. Daelemans)
	- Text Mining (D. Mladenic and M. Grobelnik)
	- Kernel Methods for Natural Language Processing (J-M. Renders)

- Jan 28: Contributed scientific talks

- Jan 29: Challenge proposals and discussion

A more detailed program will be issued in a near future.

We anticipate that participants might attend only part of the workshop.

WORKSHOP VENUE
--------------

The workshop will take place at the Xerox Research Centre Europe
(XRCE), located in Meylan (Grenoble), France. For information about
reaching XRCE please consult
http://www.xrce.xerox.com/grenoble/home.html. A shuttle service will
be organised to bring participants from downtown Grenoble (place
Victor Hugo, location of the "Hotel d'Angleterre") to XRCE in the
morning and back in the evening. Lunches will be organised on-site.

REGISTRATION
------------

Given the limited capacity of the facilities, workshop attendance
will be limited to 60 persons. Priority will be given to PASCAL
members. Both PASCAL and non-PASCAL institutions willing to send
more than two persons should designate two persons which will have
priority over the others, in case the number of applications will
exceed the capacity of the facilities.

In order to register, cut the form at the end of this call, fill it,
and then e-mail it to Rachel.Reddy at xrce.xerox.com by January 7, 2004
with subject "PASCAL workshop registration".

In case the number of registrations exceeds the attendance limits,
the organisers will communicate the impossibility to accept the
registration by January 9, 2004, by sending an e-mail message to the
address provided in the registration form.

ACCOMODATION
------------

For information about hotels in Meylan and in the nearby Grenoble,
please consult http://www.xrce.xerox.com/grenoble/home.html. Should
you need any help with hotel reservations, send an email to
Rachel.Reddy at xrce.xerox.com.

SPONSORSHIP
-----------

The workshop will be partially funded by a grant from the European
Network of Excellence "PASCAL". There will be no registration fees.
