(With apologies for cross-postings)

> The BAAL/CUP seminar 'System and Corpus: Exploring the connections' will take place on 11th-12th April 2003 at the University of Liverpool. The seminar will bring together researchers who are working mainly in either systemic-functional linguistics or corpus linguistics, and who are sympathetic to both approaches. There will be workshops led by invited speakers, and a number of individual paper presentations.
>
> TO SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT
> If you would like to present a paper, please send an abstract of no more than 400 words by email to Gordon Tucker at the University of Cardiff (tuckerg at cf.ac.uk). Topics for papers might include, but are not restricted to, these seminar themes:
> 1.	ways in which corpus evidence can be used to improve descriptions of language based on systemic-functional theory;
> 2.	(in)compatibilities between descriptions of language based on systemic-functional theory and those based on corpus research;
> 3.	future directions for research using the synergy between systemic-functional linguistics and corpus research.
> The deadline for abstracts is 30th January 2003.
>
> TO APPLY FOR A BURSARY
> We can offer two student bursaries of £100 each for the seminar. Priority will be given to postgraduate research students who are working in areas relevant to the theme of the seminar; preference will be given to students presenting papers at the seminar. If you wish to apply for a bursary, please email Susan Hunston (s.e.hunston at bham.ac.uk), giving your name and contact details, the name and institution of your supervisor, and a brief account of your research, explaining how it is relevant to this seminar.
