People on this list may be interested in an open call for expression of
interest for positions as ‘Detached National Expert’ in the field of
Language Technology and other areas at the European Commission’s Joint
Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, at the Lago Maggiore in Northern Italy. For
detailed information, go to
http://www.jrc.it/enlargement/action2003/ic-call.htm.

To support the EU enlargement policy, the JRC promotes the integration of
the EU Candidate Countries (CC) in the European Research Area (ERA) and
assists them in their preparation for the accession to the EU, in particular
through an increased participation in the relevant JRC activities. Special
attention will be given to candidatures of experts from CCs associated to
the EU RTD Framework Programme, namely: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus,
Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovak
Republic, Slovenia and Turkey.

The specific call for the field of Language Technology can be found at
http://www.jrc.it/enlargement/action2003/ipsc-j08.doc. Possible tasks
include (a) the compilation of a list of Language Technology organisations,
tools and resources existing in the EU Candidate Countries, (b)
participation in research projects, including the adaptation of existing
text mining tools to further languages, and (c) the preparation of a
proposal for project funding.

The JRC’s Language Technology group specialises in multilingual and
cross-lingual text analysis applications, using mainly statistical
techniques and multilingual thesauri and nomenclatures. Fields of activity
are document gathering, information extraction, thesaurus indexing,
multilingual classification and clustering, document similarity calculation
visualisation of textual information, etc. For more information, see
http://www.jrc.it/langtech.

The JRC is situated in Ispra, in Northern Italy, about one hour West of the
city of Milan. Its 1700 international staff work in a multi-disciplinary and
multilingual environment.

Indicative duration of the stay is 3 to 12 months. Condition for Detached
National Experts is that they are temporarily detached from their home
organisation. They receive a 105 Euro per day supplement to their home
salary. For exact conditions, see the link to ‘Detached National Experts’ on
the web site http://www.jrc.it/enlargement/action2003/ic-call.htm.

Interested persons should send their CV together with the application form
to ipsc at jrc.it before 16 June 2003. The submitted applications will be
evaluated and a reply will be sent to the applicants at the latest by
September 2003. A reserve list of successful candidates will be set up,
which will be filled by the JRC according to the future availability. The
constitution of such a list does not present any commitment for future
employment by the European Commission.
