University of Birmingham

This 3-day workshop provides an intensive introduction to the
use of corpora in the field of translation studies, focussing on the
exploitation of monolingual and parallel (translation) corpora. In
addition to learning about the application of corpus linguistics
techniques to translation studies, participants will learn about the
compilation, alignment, and investigation of parallel corpora in
translation studies and will have the opportunity for hands-on practice
using MonoConc, ParaConc, Multiconcord, Lookup and Vanilla Aligner. The
format of the workshop will be a mix of lectures and practice sessions.

Presenters: Michael Barlow, Dorothy Kenny and Pernilla Danielsson.

Michael Barlow is Associate Professor of Applied Language
Studies at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He is the creator
of the software programs MonoConc and ParaConc and has given
presentations and workshops on corpus linguistics in a variety of
different countries around the world.

Dorothy Kenny is Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Language and
Intercultural Studies at Dublin City
University and a founder member of the Centre for Translation and

Study (St. Jerome, 2001) and co-editor of Unity in Diversity: Current
Trends in Translation Studies.
