Research Associate-Lancaster University
Department of Psychology/Department of Computing

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate to work on a
12-month project investigating the content and resonance of extremist
(propaganda) literature. The project is a UK government-funded
multidisciplinary collaboration between the Universities of Lancaster
(computer science and psychology), Royal Holloway (international
relations), and Warwick (sociology). It will use qualitative and
quantitative methods to identify prominent narratives and arguments
within the literature, analyse the perceptions and cognitions of the
authors, and examine the actual resonance of, and resistance to,
messages with those consuming the literature.

The successful applicant will be responsible for data collation and
analysis, with a particular focus on examining language use within the
literature. He or she will also have the opportunity to apply advanced
computational-linguistic methods to the collated data and use these
methods to develop models of risk. He or she will be expected to
contribute to journal publications and conference presentations, and
should anticipate being an active member of a multidisciplinary forensic
research group. If desired, there will be an opportunity during the
project for the successful applicant to apply for further research
funding or for funding to carry out a PhD.

The post will suit a self-motivated and ambitious individual with
experience in social science or corpus linguistics. The individual will
hold at least an upper-second class undergraduate degree in computer
science, linguistics, psychology, or another cognate discipline.
Experience of conducting analysis of textual data, and knowledge of
current UK security context as it relates to issues of 'extremism' and
'risk', will be an advantage.

The post is for a fixed-term of 12 months, available from January
onwards.

Informal enquiries are welcome, and should be addressed to Dr Paul
Taylor (email: p.j.taylor at lancaster.ac.uk; Tel: 01524 594421).
