The Corpus of Modern Scottish Writing project is holding a two-day
Symposium on Variationist Corpora Online to mark the second year of this
AHRC-funded project. The Symposium will be held at the University of
Glasgow on 22-23 May 2009. Further details of the programme can be found
below. If you would like to attend, we would be grateful if you could
contact Jennifer Bann at J.Bann at englang.arts.gla.ac.uk by 27/04/09,
returning the 'booking form' at the bottom of this message. Booking is
'first come, first served' - we may need to cap numbers owing to the
venue size.

Linguistic variation is a major issue for researchers working on
computer-based language projects. This has implications at every level:
in particular spelling, lexis, grammar and syntax. The availability of
corpora online brings its own issues, and also many benefits. The aim of
the Symposium is to gather together scholars working on (or intending to
work on) such projects, in order to share experience and possible
solutions.

On Friday 22 May, the symposium will feature two keynote talks and a
series of shorter talks with opportunities for discussion. The Saturday
morning sessions will take the form of panel discussions on issues
related to the creation and use of online variationist corpora. The
Symposium will be held in the St Andrews Building of the University of
Glasgow, about 20 minutes' walk from both the Department of English
Language and the University's main building. There will be no charge for
the symposium, which includes lunch on Friday, but delegates will be
responsible for their own dinner and accommodation expenses.

The University maintains a list of local hotels and guest houses, which
is accessible (along with an online enquiry form) at
http://www.cvso.co.uk/accommodation/hotels/hot_intro.htm. Please contact
the CMSW team if you would like any further information about
accommodation. Travel information can be found at:
http://www.gla.ac.uk/general/maps/, and a map of the campus at
http://www.gla.ac.uk/general/maps/campusmap.html.

with kind regards,

The CMSW team
