Postdoc Fellow, programmer for medical text processing & information retrieval


Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Fellow and programmer positions in medical text processing and information retrieval. Candidates will work on clinical informatics projects at the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, a research and development division of the U.S. National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. The Lister Hill Center's research activities include basic and applied research in fields such as: tools and standards for facilitating electronic medical records development, natural language processing for understanding medical text and improving information retrieval, medical knowledge representation, text mining, multimedia database design, interactive publications, machine learning techniques and all aspects of image processing research. The Center has a tradition of advancing health information systems and its world class research staff is involved in activities that define and support the research infrastructure for next generation medical information systems.



Applicants must have excellent software engineering skills and show experience in developing algorithms and software for NLP/IR systems; experience with biomedical language processing; knowledge of machine learning techniques; and substantial experience with Java, C, C++, and Web development.

Postdoctoral candidates should have a Ph.D., MD or equivalent degree in medical informatics, information science, computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, or related disciplines. Candidates should have research experience in these areas. Post doctoral fellowships are in residence at LHNCBC in Bethesda, MD for one year with the possibility of renewal. It is the general policy of the NIH that postdoctoral trainees should not remain at NIH for more than 5 years. Stipends are commensurate with research experience and education.
