PhD-position in semantic linking of multimedia content

The digital library of the future will not be standalone but a dynamic
and highly linked entity preserving both the original documents and
providing for user-generated content and links to and from external
resources. The Human Media Interaction (HMI) group of the University of
Twente, investigates multimedia content linking to support and provide
facilities for navigating and exploring text, audio, images and video.
In this context, there is funding available for a PhD position starting
from January 2010.

The research will be carried out in close collaboration with the HMI
Multimedia retrieval group and team of experts of an EU project
consortium in the Digital Libraries program. The research will focus on
deploying diverse, automatically generated, time-labeled annotations
-for example coming from automatic speech recognition- for connecting
heterogeneous data sources, and will be strongly evaluation-driven.

Requirements
strong background in Computer Science or a related area
willingness to combine formal scientific work with application-oriented
research in order to solve real-world problems
research interests the research theme mentioned above
basic knowledge of automatic content analysis such as speech recognition
(expertise is a pre)
good programming and scripting skills (C/C++, Perl and alike)
willingness to work in an international environment

Conditions of employment
PhD salaries start at 2042 Euro gross per month (figures based on
full-time employment, CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten)
