Candidates will have a PhD or equivalent, an appropriate research track
record, and a background in Internationalisation / Localisation.

*OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: *

The holder of this position will, under guidance, direct a group of
postgraduate researchers working on the following objectives:

    * Achieve a thorough understanding of current guidelines and
      practices in digital content development
    * Improve the localisability of digital material
    * Implement proper internationalisation, localisation and
personalisation practices at the design stage

Job holders will be expected to contribute to the activities of the LRC.

*DESCRIPTION: *

* *

Localisation is the adaptation of digital content to culture, locale and
linguistic environment. The Centre for Next Generation Localisation
(CNGL) is a large Academia-Industry partnership, funded by Science
Foundation Ireland and Industry Partners, with over 100 researchers
developing novel technologies addressing the key localisation challenges
of volume, access and personalisation.

One of the major research strands within the CNGL is Localisation
Technologies and Processes (LOC).

The key challenges to be addressed by the holder of this position are
quality improvements in relation to the source material: well-designed,
high-quality, internationalised and standard-compliant content is needed
to feed a largely automated localisation process. However, to date this
type of original content is the exception rather than the norm because
of (a) the disconnect between authors (or programmers) and localisers,
(b) the lack of credible, measurable and widely implemented standards
for multilingual digital content development, (c) the lack of convincing
cultural and linguistic design guidelines for digital content aimed at
international audiences and (d) the (often prohibitive) cost involved in
manual mark up of material with localisation-relevant metadata.
Automatic annotation of localisation input with metadata supporting the
localisation workflow has not been explored. Furthermore, a strong case
for the need to move localisation and localisation technologies out of
the silo, and of making internationalisation, localisation and
personalisation part of the whole production process, rather than an
often badly planned afterthought, have to be prepared for content
developers.

Essential Criteria:

          o A PhD or equivalent
          o Appropriate research track record
o Background in Internationalisation / Localisation / Language
            Technologies or other relevant areas

Desirable Criteria:

o Experience of working on large-scale research projects

o Effective communication skills.

o Evidence of working on research teams.

o Evidence of securing research funding.

o Experience of liaising with industry.

o Experience of postgraduate support.

The successful candidates will join a group of 18 staff at the
Localisation Research Centre (LRC) at the University of Limerick,
Ireland and work with Reinhard Schäler, Dr. Liam Murray, Dr. Chris
Exton, and J.J. Collins of the Department of Computer Science and
Information Systems, and with Yvonne Cleary of the Department of
Languages and Intercultural Studies. _www.localisation.ie

Starting dates: now -- November 2010. Salary: €39,589--€53,981 p.a.
(maximum starting salary is €49,764 p.a.). CNGL provides
state-of-the-art research facilities and supports travel to present at
conferences.
