Senior Academic Appointment: Research Project Leader/Professor, Machine
Translation

The Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) is a €30M
collaborative research centre that involves Dublin City University
(DCU), Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, University of
Limerick, and nine industrial partners, including world leaders in their
respective fields. CNGL is DCU-led, is funded by Science Foundation
Ireland (SFI) and is directed by Professor Josef van Genabith, School of
Computing, DCU. CNGL is a dynamic Academia-Industry partnership with
over 100 researchers developing novel technologies addressing the key
localisation challenges of volume, access and personalisation. Our
objective is to produce substantial advances in the basic and applied
research underpinning the design, implementation and evaluation of the
blueprints for the Next Generation Localisation Framework. CNGL provides
a world class collaborative research infrastructure, including computing
facilities, administrative, management and commercialisation support.
Our work is guided by the vision of enabling people to interact with
content, products and services in their own language, according to their
own culture, and according to their own personal needs.

We now wish to recruit a Research Project Leader with an established
international track record and reputation in the area of Machine
Translation to join the Centre’s Research Leadership team and lead what
is probably one of the world’s largest academic Machine Translation
research groups comprising over 50 researchers. The salary offered will
reflect the experience and international standing of the successful
candidate. The position is based within the School of Computing at DCU
and the post-holder will contribute to the normal teaching and
administrative functions of a senior member of academic staff within the
School.

Experience and Skills Required

Applicants must possess a doctorate in Machine Translation or a related
discipline. The successful candidate will have already established a
world class reputation for research in the area of Machine Translation,
with an excellent record of high-impact international publications, a
strong vision for how to advance the current state-of-the-art in Machine
Translation and ideally have a strong track record of leading a large
research group and mentoring PhD students. Experience in attracting
funding for, and conducting/coordinating, large-scale international
research projects, in academic ‘evaluation campaigns’ of Machine
Translation systems and in projects involving the release/maintenance of
Open Source MT software would be an advantage.

In addition to leading a large Machine Translation research group, the
successful candidate will be expected to assume the role of Principal
Investigator, in charge of projects funded by existing grants to CNGL,
and to provide leadership across a range of research activities
spanning Machine Translation, Speech Technologies (focused on Speech
Translation) and Text Analytics. Experience in an environment involving
collaborative research with industry/commercial partners and with the
commercialisation of university research through licensing and/or the
formation of spin-out companies is also desirable.

Appointment

The appointment will be made at the level of either Associate Professor
or Professor, commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the
successful candidate. This contract may be up to 5 years in duration.

Salary scales:

-- Associate Professor €82,974 - €110,062
-- Professor €113,064 - €145,952

These salary scales may be affected by the provisions of the 2011
Budget. Appointment will be commensurate with experience and may be
subject to the first point of the salary scale.
