Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL), Dublin City University (DCU),
Ireland

Positions available: Post-doctoral researcher, PhD scholarship

The CNGL at DCU has two vacancies on the EU FP7 Khresmoi project

Medical practitioners and the wider population increasingly have access to
large amounts of online medical information. This has the potential to assist
them in their work or daily lives. However, they will only be able to make
use of this information if they can locate relevant details efficiently. A
major challenge to achieving this objective is the very large volume of
information which is often now available which can make it difficult to
locate relevant material. A further challenge is posed by the fact that
relevant content may only be available in a language of which the searcher
has little or no knowledge. The Khresmoi project aims to build systems for
multilingual multimodal search and access for biomedical information sources.

1) Post-doctoral Researcher

We are seeking a post-doctoral level researcher to work in the area of
cross-language information retrieval. This position will focus on translation
and user interaction issues to support cross-language information access in
the Khresmoi project. Suitable candidates will have doctoral or equivalent
level experience in one or more of (cross-language) information retrieval,
machine translation or human-computer interaction. The position is available
for up to two years in the first instance.

2) PhD Scholarship

We are seeking a PhD candidate researcher to work in the area of
cross-language multi-document summarization. This position will focus on the
development of multi-document summarization methods which will work in
collaboration with machine translation tools to provide effective access to
medical information across linguistic barriers. Suitable candidates will have
a background in a computing related discipline including experience in
programming, ideally with an interest in one or more areas of natural
language processing. The scholarship is available for up to three years.

The successful candidates will join the large multi-disciplinary language
technology research laboratory at the CNGL.

The Khresmoi project involves collaboration with a large number of partners
across the EU. The successful candidates will have opportunities for travel
and collaboration with other project members. Further details of the Khresmoi
project are available at: www.khresmoi.eu and of the CNGL at: www.cngl.ie.

Applicants for either position should send a full CV including names of three
referees and a short note describing their interest in joining the Khresmoi
project to the project investigator at DCU, Dr Gareth Jones
<Gareth.Jones at computing.dcu.ie>. Informal enquires regarding these positions
are also welcome. Both positions are available immediately.

Closing date for applications is 13th May 2011.
