Readers of this list may be interested in the following position, 

funded by Tübitak.  The successful applicant will be working at the 

European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy. 

This is one of altogether 44 positions, but the only one in the field of 

computational linguistics / media monitoring.

Short description of activity:

 

The candidate will carry out scientific and technical tasks

contributing to the Europe Media Monitor (EMM) family of

applications of the OPTIMA action inside the JRC’s Global

Security and Crisis Management Unit (GlobeSec). EMM tools

gather and analyse about 100,000 media reports per day in 50

languages from several thousand online news sites and display the

analysis results on publicly accessible web pages

(http://emm.newsbrief.eu/overview.html). Recent efforts focus on

additionally gathering and analysing social media such as Blogs

and Twitter. The objective is to support European Institutions,

national authorities in the EU Member States, international

organisations and authorities in extra-European partner countries

in their daily monitoring tasks. OPTIMA’s research and

development work is thus task and application-oriented.

 

Required profile: 

 

We are looking for motivated PhD students or Post-doctoral

fellows in Information Technology, Computer Science,

Computational Linguistics, Data Mining, Machine Learning or

related areas to contribute to OPTIMA’s media and web

monitoring efforts and to publish its research results.

We are offering the possibility to work in an international, multicultural

and highly motivated team contributing to leading edge

developments.

 

The candidate’s field of research should be related to one or more

of the following fields: Language Technology; multilingual

natural language processing; machine translation; web mining;

web technology; media monitoring and analysis.

Good programming skills in Java are required. Additional

knowledge of a scripting language would be a bonus. Experience

with developing or using text mining tools would also be an

advantage.

 

An ability to work in a multi-national team and a very good level

of spoken and written English is indispensable as English is the

group’s main working language. The required level of the

language is C2 according to the Common European Framework

of Reference for Languages (documented proof of the language

knowledge will be requested for the pre-selected applications).

Active or passive knowledge of other European and non-

European natural languages would be a clear advantage.
