PHD STUDENTSHIP IN NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING

Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation
School of Informatics
University of Edinburgh

The Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation (ILCC) at the
University of Edinburgh invites applications for a three-year PhD
studentship starting in September 2012. ILCC is dedicated to the
pursuit of basic and applied research on computational approaches to
language, communication and cognition.

The studentship is associated with the EPSRC project "A Unified Model
of Compositional and Distributional Semantics: Theory and
Applications". The aim of this project is to develop a general
modeling framework of compositional distributional semantics and apply
it to cognitive modeling and large-scale NLP tasks.

The student will be supervised by Dr. Mirella Lapata, and will work on
a topic drawn from following research areas:

o distributional models of semantics, including compositional and
  syntax-aware vector-space models

o topic models (including non-parametric and syntactic variants)

o Bayesian models of Lexical Acquisition

o Bayesian language models

The successful candidate will have a good honors degree or equivalent
in computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, computer
science, or a related discipline. He/she will have strong programming
skills and previous experience in machine learning and/or natural
language processing.

The studentship covers maintenance at the research council rate of
around GBP 13 500 per year, plus tuition fees at the EU/UK rate.
Applications are restricted to EU/UK citizens. The start date of the
studentship is flexible, but can be no earlier than September 1, 2012.

If you have further questions, please contact Dr. Mirella Lapata
(mlap at inf.ed.ac.uk). To apply, please follow the instructions at:

http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply.html

As your research area, please select "Institute of Communicating and
Collaborative Systems". On the application form under "Research
Project", please state "EPSRC Studentship: BayesComp".

Application deadline: March 31, 2012.

Applications received after the deadline may be considered, but this
cannot be guaranteed.
