An exciting opportunity is available to undertake postdoctoral research in the area of natural language processing and cyber security in Security Lancaster, Lancaster University’s research centre for security and protection science. You will have the opportunity to join and build on the centre’s internationally-leading research on digital persona analysis. This research was highlighted as one of the 100 big ideas of the future in Research Councils UK and Universities UK and is being used in practical settings to protect children online. We have a longstanding expertise in developing natural language processing techniques and tools for cyber security issues that effect vulnerable user groups online or that aim to empower users to mobilise their digital personas more effectively for social good.

Key projects in this area include:

Isis: Protecting Children in Online Social Networks (EPSRC/ESRC) (http://www.research.lancs.ac.uk/portal/en/projects/isis-protecting-children-in-online-social-network(c7966087-aa10-4b62-a4fd-e972efa9445d).html

Security Lancaster is one of only four flagship Lancaster Research Centres and was amongst the first 8 Academic Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security Research recognised in the UK. It is one of the few multi-disciplinary centres to tackle human and technological challenges to cyber security by integrating computer science and communication systems researchers with expertise from sociology, international relations, behavioural science and law. Involving 60 researchers (28 academic staff), the centre is internationally renowned for its cyber security research on network resilience, security of communications, securing mobile and cyber-physical systems, intelligent tools for tackling cyber crime and studies of user behaviours leading to cyber security threats. This research constitutes a multi-million pounds grant portfolio funded from a variety of sources including UK research councils, European Commission, government departments and industry.

You will join the Identi-scope project. You will build on earlier and on-going work on digital persona analysis to develop new techniques in this context, evaluate these using existing and new corpora of online communications and extend existing tools to make them useable for end-users of research. Experience and knowledge of natural language processing techniques is essential to the post.

Interested candidates should contact, Professor Awais Rashid, Director of Security Lancaster: marash at comp.lancs.ac.uk.

This is a fixed term contract for eight months.
