</P>
<P><FONT FACE="Courier New">Description:</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">Conduct research and development projects in natural </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">language processing, computational linguistics, speech </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">processing, multimedia, and document processing. Specific</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">areas of research may include text extraction, document </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">classification and routing, information retrieval and </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">filtering, visualization, document structure finding, </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">duplicate document detection, document analysis and </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">processing, name matching, thesaurus building, controlled </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">vocabulary, and others.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT FACE="Courier New">Work includes problem analysis, literature search, software</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">and database design and development, and product evaluation,</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">as well as reporting and publishing, for all phases of the</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">group's work. Incumbents will write and present their </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">research plans and results to internal audiences and </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">external sponsors. Software development work includes any</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">or all of the following: writing shell scripts, data </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">preparation using sed, awk, Perl and similar tools, writing</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">and testing, programs in C, C++, Java or other high-level </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">languages. Incumbent is expected to become familiar with </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">and use desktop software tools such as spreadsheets, slide </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">presentation software, and word processing. S/he is </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">expected to learn, use, and develop software for the </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">HighView computing environment, including applications </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">and, potentially, additions to the HighView product itself.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT FACE="Courier New">Qualifications: </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- MS / MA or PhD in computer science, linguistics, </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New"> mathematics, or related area(s), </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- At least two years of research and/or development in any</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New"> area of natural language processing (NLP), computational</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New"> linguistics, document analysis, or allied area(s). </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New"> Experience may be in university, government, and/or</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New"> private industry.</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- Writing, including proposals, reports, papers.</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- Familiarity with basic statistics and data graphing tools.</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- U.S. citizen; eligible to apply for clearance to work with</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New"> classified material.</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- Competence in programming in one or more of the following:</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New"> C/C++, Perl, Java.</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- Relational database knowledge (SQL, PLSQL) helpful.</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- Familiarity with sed, awk, Perl, and similar tools </FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New"> helpful.</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- Operating systems (Windows NT, Linux) commands.</FONT>
<BR><FONT FACE="Courier New">- Ability to learn new software languages and tools quickly</FONT>
