<b>The Course</b>
Corpora and Language Teaching offers anyone with a professional or academic interest in language teaching a unique opportunity to consolidate their practical skills, learn about the latest developments, and develop their understanding of the relevant theoretical issues.
It is especially aimed at language-teachers, directors of studies, teacher-trainers, applied linguists, materials writers, and anyone else in the language-teaching community.
<b>Objectives</b>
One of the chief goals of the course is to offer a rapid ‘skills upgrade’ in an intensive programme of seminars and hands-on practical work. During the course, you will work alongside other professionals, as well as with the full-time students taking our MSc in Lexical Computing and Lexicography.
<b>Content</b>
The topics include:
· monolingual and multilingual corpora, and their relevance for language teaching and materials writing
· other electronic resources and their potential
· concordancers and other data-mining software for extracting pedagocially-relevant material
· learner corpora and their relevance to teaching and testing materials
· dictionaries for language learners: current developments and future possibilities
Key issues and the theoretical ideas that help us to understand them better are first discussed before being further explored through practical exercises in data analysis and materials creation at the computer.
<b>Course Tutors</b>
<b>Raphael Salkie</b> is Professor of Language Studies at the University of Brighton. He has published widely in linguistics and translation. He is an expert on the use of parallel corpora in teaching and research, and runs the INTERSECT project at Brighton.
<b>Michael Rundell </b>is a professional lexicographer, and has been closely involved in the ‘corpus revolution’ that has transformed ELT dictionaries and is beginning to have a similar impact in other areas of language teaching. He has edited several market-leading dictionaries, including the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, and he is Editor-in-Chief of the recently-published Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, which was written using software developed at ITRI, University of Brighton.
<b>Chris Tribble </b>– one of the best-known figures in this field – will also be joining us for a day to give us the benefit of his extensive experience in using corpora in the classroom.
