Advanced Research</font>

<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman">The Center for Advanced Research
at PricewaterhouseCoopers is seeking interns for the summer of 2008. These
interns will perform important tasks for two of our projects - <b>Magic
Lens</b> and <b>Sherlock</b>.</font>

<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman">The Magic Lens project is developing
new techniques for the detection and display of similarities in documents
-- even those based in paper. There are three openings for summer interns:</font>
<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman"><b>Computational Linguistics specialist</b>:
Duties include evaluating existing methods and developing new approaches
for challenging problems in document concept classification and similarity
metrics, semantic parsing, text mining, and paraphrase detection. The candidate
must be currently enrolled in a computer science, computational linguistics,
or similar graduate program and should have prior experience dealing with
complex language processing problems. Programming will be required and
familiarity with C# or .NET is preferred.</font>
<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman"><b>Visualization specialist</b>:
Duties include evaluating existing methods and developing new approaches
for visualizing large data-sets, especially clusters of items. The candidate
must be currently enrolled in a computer science, MIS, or similar graduate
program and should have prior experience dealing with prototype development
or visualization of large datasets. Some programming will be required and
familiarity with C# or .NET is preferred.</font>
<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman"><b>Image recognition specialist</b>:
Duties include applying existing methods and developing new approaches
to the comparison and recognition of images from documents. Some programming
will be required and familiarity with C# or .NET is preferred.</font>

<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman">Project Sherlock is developing
software to detect and respond to meaningful patterns in accounting data,
drawing on techniques from statistics, data modeling, data mining and machine
learning. There are three openings for summer interns:</font>
<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman"><b>Analytics Specialist</b>: Duties
include evaluating existing methods and developing new approaches for challenging
problems in classification, anomaly detection, and exploratory data analysis.
The candidate must be currently enrolled in a computer science, statistics,
or similar graduate program and should have prior experience dealing with
large and/or complex data analysis problems. Programming will be required
and familiarity with SQL, Matlab, and R is preferred.</font>
<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman"><b>User Experience/Interface Specialist</b>:
Duties will include assisting with usability studies, design and implementation
of human-computer interfaces to facilitate analysis of large quantities
of transactional data. The candidate must be currently enrolled in a computer
science, MIS, or similar graduate program and should have prior experience
in user interface design and implementation.</font>
<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman"><b>Business/Data Mining Analyst</b>:
The intern will work with both client and research staff to identify and
solve business problems that can be addressed with statistical, data mining,
or other existing analytical techniques. The candidate should be currently
enrolled in an MIS, computer science, or similar program and should have
strong quantitative skills and prior experience analyzing business data
in an industrial setting. SQL experience is required and familiarity with
OLAP and data mining toolboxes is preferred.</font>

<br><font size=2 face="Times New Roman">Each intern will select a task
for the summer, the details of which will be based on the match of project
needs to student backgrounds, but will be hands-on, involving substantial
design, analysis and interaction with live data. Summer interns, like all
members of the staff at the Center, are expected to be curious, eager to
learn, passionate to contribute their ideas, accepting of criticism and
suggestions, and willing to constructively confront difficult problems
and situations. The candidate should also have excellent verbal and
written communication skills.</font>
