<p class=MsoNormal>Department of Psychology, Lancaster University<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Full-Time PhD Studentship<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Closing date for applications: 8 September 2009<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship
to study persuasion and influence as it occurs in voices/messages that speak
out against extremism. The studentship is available for three years from 1
October 2009, and will be supervised by Dr. Paul Taylor (Psychology) and Dr.
Paul Rayson (Computing) at Lancaster University.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>The successful applicant will join a larger project examining
the content and resonance of extremist messages and counter-messages as found
in online and offline media. He or she will have the opportunity to engage in
all aspects of this research, but will focus their PhD research on better
understanding what makes an effective voice against those promoting violence.
While the successful applicant will be free to shape the focus of their PhD, it
is anticipated that the research will combine qualitative and quantitative
methodologies and make use of the purpose built language analysis and
corpus-linguistic software available at Lancaster.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>The successful applicant will be resident in the Department
of Psychology’s Investigative Expertise Unit, a multidisciplinary
research group that studies cognitive and language processes within applied law
enforcement and security settings (for more information see
http://www.lancs.ac.uk/staff/taylorpj). They will additionally be encouraged to
become an active member of UCREL, an internationally leading centre for
computer-aided analysis of naturally occurring language (for more information
see http://ucrel.lancs.ac.uk) with members in the Department of Linguistics and
English Language and the Department of Computing at Lancaster. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>The Department of Psychology has a very strong and vibrant
research atmosphere, which our large postgraduate community is encouraged to be
part of. We have a first-class supervision record with a 100% submission
success rate for our fully-funded students. In addition, all our students
receive their own research support budgets (e.g., to pay participants for their
time) and an associated travel budget, which can be used to attend national and
international conferences.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>The studentships cover Home (UK/EU) tuition fee and a
maintenance allowance equivalent to current UK Research Council studentships.
Applicants who are not eligible for the Home tuition fee may still apply, but
they must demonstrate ability to self-fund the difference between the Home and
Overseas tuition fee (for more information see http://www.lancs.ac.uk/pgfunding/costs.htm).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Applicants should be motivated, ambitious, and interested in
the psychology and linguistics of communication. They should hold or
expect to gain at least a first class or upper 2.1 honours degree, or its
equivalent, in psychology, linguistics, or a related discipline. Having or
expecting to gain a Masters qualification with ESRC recognised research
training will be an advantage. Applicants should apply online at:
https://www.pgapps.lancs.ac.uk/ and should include a CV and statement of
interest explaining briefly why they want to do a PhD with reference to this
specific area.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Informal enquiries are welcome, and should be addressed to
Dr. Paul Taylor (email: p.j.taylor@lancaster.ac.uk; Tel: 01524 594421).<o:p></o:p></p>
