It's pretty easy to find articles by Geoffrey Leech talking about annotation "levels". Literary and Linguistic Computing, 1992 is just one of many.<div><br></div><div>I really don't think that distinctions between Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics and NLP are worth making for this activity. In particular, it's safe to assume that most things about corpora were discovered and carefully documented (but not necessarily marketed in the US) before 1970, and that NLP is merely catching up.</div>
