RESEARCH ASSISTANT IN NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING

Applications are invited for a full-time fixed-term (1 year)
position as a research assistant in Natural Language Processing at
the junior research group "Cognitive Models of Human Language
Processing and their Application to Dialogue Systems" headed by Vera
Demberg. The goal of the research position is to develop a
compositional semantics framework for PLTAG, a strictly incremental
version of tree-adjoining grammar (TAG). The scientific interest and
challenge of this project lies in designing a semantic construction
process which reflects the strict incrementality of the PLTAG
syntactic derivation. A further goal of the project is to combine
the to-be-developed compositional PLTAG semantics with a
distributional model of semantics.
Saarland University is a European leader in Computer Science
research and teaching, and is especially renowned for its research
in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing. The
newly established group is a part of the interdisciplinary MMCI
Cluster of Excellence formed in partnership with top-ranked research
institutions located on the Saarland University campus: Max Planck
Institute for Informatics, Max Planck Institute for Software Systems
and German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).
Researchers come from all over the world and the research language
is English.
The ideal candidate for the position should have a doctoral degree
or equivalent in computational linguistics, linguistics or computer
science or a related field, and should previously have worked on
semantics. Candidates with a MSc-level degree will be considered if
they have experience with semantics and tree-adjoining grammars. A
strong academic record, excellent analytical skills and a clear
aptitude for autonomous, creative research will be priority
selection criteria. Good programming skills are required for this
position.
The candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication
skills in English and/or German.
