It would not be the norm but I have never underestimated the pettiness, egocentricity and long memories of academics as a profession--all anecdotal evidence and the novels about universities confirm this. A great example is when I was in committee where one of the foreign experts hadn't understood they would be public (though this was in the instructions give to him) and gave explicit credit to one applicant (but not the others) for his expected great future work. He later defended this by saying that he wasn't aware the review was going to be public...<o:p></o:p></div><div style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0cm; font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Consolas; "><o:p> </o:p></div><div style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0cm; font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Consolas; ">Of course, openness does not make abuse impossible -- for example, there is great leeway in formulating job announcements and choosing expert reviewers, and senior people who favour a certain candidate do play these cards. These objections were legitimate but the committee chose to ignore them without explanation.<o:p></o:p></div><div style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0cm; font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Consolas; "><o:p> </o:p></div><div style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0cm; font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Consolas; ">all the best,<o:p></o:p></div><div style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0cm; font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Consolas; "><o:p> </o:p></div><div style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0cm; font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Consolas; ">H<o:p></o:p></div><div style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0cm; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; "><o:p> </o:p></div></div>_______________________________________________<br>UNSUBSCRIBE from this page:<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://mailman.uib.no/options/corpora" style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline; ">http://mailman.uib.no/options/corpora</a><br>Corpora mailing list<br><a href="mailto:Corpora@uib.no" style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline; ">Corpora@uib.no</a><br><a href="http://mailman.uib.no/listinfo/corpora" style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline; ">http://mailman.uib.no/listinfo/corpora</a><br></div></span></blockquote></div><br></div></body></html>
