"Knowledge and Discourse: Speculating on disciplinary futures"
                         A Call for Papers:
Extended deadline: 15th January, 2002

Dear Colleagues,

The English Centre at Hong Kong University, with the Language Centre, is
organising a follow-up conference to our 1st Knowledge & Discourse
conference back in June 1996, entitled: "Knowledge and Discourse:
Speculating on disciplinary futures" [KD2 for short!]
Scheduled themes and plenary speakers are:
Universities and knowledge production Steve Fuller (Warwick, UK)
Critical approaches to literacy Roz Ivanic (Lancaster, UK)
Voices and culture in the classroom Claire Kramsch (Berkeley, USA)
Natural, social and virtual worlds Bruno Latour (Paris, France)
Discourses of popular culture Gregory Lee (Lyon, France)
Disciplinary discourses and practices Paul Prior (U-C, Illinois, USA)
Workplace discourses and practices Srikant Sarangi (Cardiff, UK)
Gender, ethnicity and identity tba

The conference will also feature pre-conference workshops and conversations
featuring plenary speakers, and a debate between Steve Fuller and Bruno
Latour. We are aiming at an interactive conference, featuring discussion
sessions after each plenary, and at the end of each trio of parallel session
papers or colloquia [we are accepting proposals for 3-paper or 6-paper
colloquia]. All discussions will be designed to address key questions or
issues nominated by the speakers.

We hope you will circulate this Call for Papers to your colleagues and
others in your professional network, and to any discussion groups to which
you subscribe. For more information, please check the attachment, or if
that fails to download, visit the conference website directly at:
http://ec.hku.hk/kd2
The site will be regularly updated, notably with information on the
pre-conference workshops (in December), selected abstracts (from February),
and the program schedule (April).
Note again the extended deadline for submissions of Jan 15th 2002
We hope to see you in June, 2002, here in Hong Kong.

Colin Barron and Nigel Bruce
for the KD2 Steering Committee
