Genre vs. register

Dear Colleagues,

Can anyone explain brefly (or point me in the right direction) how
'genre' and register' relate to each other. Halliday and Hasan (1985:
38) define registers as varieties of language ‘typically associated with
a particular situational configuration of field, tenor and mode’.
Fairclough (1995: 132) defines genres as various ‘uses of language
associated with particular socially ratified activity types’.

All help appreciated.

Chris
