Dear colleagues,

We hope you have enjoyed your holidays. September has come and now that we are all back at work, we are pleased to announce that information about the 17th International Workshop on Discourse Studies: “Critique and Decolonization”, which will take place in Madrid in March 2011, is now available at our new website:

http://www.ffil.uam.es/mirco/index_eng.php (click on News on the left)

The speakers we propose address this subject from different approaches, and have been chosen either because of their well-known contributions to the question or because of the new directions they are opening up. Most of their names will be familiar to you, while others have recently defended their doctoral theses in this area. The audience will be expected to play a very active role, taking part in the debate by means of questions sent in beforehand (in fact, those who send these questions will be considers as speakers).

REGISTRATION

The information leaflet and registration form are attached to this message. If you know anyone who might be interested in attending the workshop, please feel free to forward this message to them or contact us and we will send them the information.

The deadline for registration is 20 October. Places are limited to 40 (including speakers and the organising committee), so please register as soon as possible. Preference will be given to those contributing to debates, and then on a first come, first served, basis.

Please include with your application a brief CV, and your abstract (optional, see below). Once we receive the registration form, the organisation committee will send you a message of acceptance and then (first week of November), and only then, you can complete the registration by paying the inscription fee.

PLEASE, DO NOT PAY UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEBATE

For those of you who want to contribute to the debates, it is very important to take into account that:

1. You should focus on just one of the three sessions described in the programme. A question should be addressed in the discussion scheduled to follow the speakers’ presentations. These questions will be made available previously to the discussants. We shall also endeavour to have them included in the subsequent publication. For this reason, please state not only the author, the title and the question itself, but also to which session your contribution is addressed. Please also let us have a brief vita of yourself, for inclusion in the Conference folder, and possibly in the final publication.

2. All those contributing questions will receive a certificate as presenters. Unfortunately, due to time restrictions, other kinds of contributions, such as talks or posters, cannot be considered.

THE EVENT

Forgive us for stating the obvious, but please note this is not intended to be a congress, but rather a workshop in which we hope to exchange ideas on a particular subject, that of critical perspectives in the study of discourse practices, and the post-colonial viewpoint. We hope all participants will play an active role in this discussion; the idea is to focus on the scheduled topics, not to present our own work.

ORGANISING YOUR JOURNEY

In relation to your stay here, please take into account that the Workshop will start in the afternoon (24th March) and finish in the evening (25th), so we would strongly recommend that you consider arriving in Madrid on the 24th and staying until the 26th in the morning. Your accommodation at “Residencia Cristalera” is in the country, in the heart of the mountains to the north of Madrid. The Residencia is very comfortable, and the surroundings are beautiful. We are organising coach transfer from the airport, and it will be very helpful for us if you accept the above recommendation regarding travel times.

ATTESTATIONS

Finally, if in order to attend the workshop, you have the support of an institution or company, and there are any requirements to be met, please do not delay in letting us have all the necessary details so the corresponding certificates can be prepared.

And, of course, if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,

Organizing Committee

Luisa Martín Rojo (Scientific Committee coordinator)
Miguel Pérez Milans (Plenary speakers abstract submissions)
Miriam Jiménez Bernal (Executive secretary)
Simone Belli (Participant abstract submissions)
