Call for Papers

Special Issue on: ‘Media and the Democratic Transition in the Arab
Spring Countries’
( Journal of Arab & Muslim Media Research)
http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journals/view-journal,id=148/

The Arab Spring countries have witnessed an influx of media outlets
during the last two years. Scores of satellite TV channels, radio
stations in addition to hundreds of newspapers and magazines have
emerged in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya after decades of censorship and
curtailments of freedom of speech by the ruling governments. This
unprecedented development has been welcomed by many as a healthy sign
of an emerging democracy being shaped partly by the power of the
‘independent’ media as watchdogs . However lots of concerns have also
been widely expressed about what has been termed as chaos in the
organization of the media in that part of the world. Many media
outlets have been seen as tools in the hands of those who are
spearheading the counter revolution upsurge.

This special issue of the Journal of Arab and Muslim Media Research
aims to address the complexity of the changes in the media scene and
looks at the extent to which current developments are contributing to
the democratic process in those countries.

Research papers based on empirical studies are invited regarding (and
not necessarily limited to) the following areas of enquiry:

1- Media (re)organization in the Arab spring countries
2- Media regulation: Laws and ethics in journalism practice
3- Freedom of expression VS social responsibility
4- Media coverage of current affairs and the democratic transition
5- Should public service broadcasting media be protected?
6- New media, the youth and political engagement
7- Social media networks and the empowerment of marginalized
communities
8- The media as a watchdog for building democracy
9- Media and women empowerment
10- Media ownership, ideological influences and agenda setting
11- Can the media be tools for counter revolution?
