Professor of Sociology with an emphasis on level of living research

Professor of Sociology with an emphasis on level of living research at the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI). Reference number SU FV-1595-14.

Subject description

By level of living research is meant theoretically grounded empirical studies of individuals' living conditions, where living conditions are measured by micro-level indicators (data on individuals). Examples of living conditions include family life, education, working life, economic circumstances and health. Levels and distributions alike, as well as changes in levels and distributions, are central objects of study in level of living research. Both analyses of welfare development and of inequality (social stratification) are thus relevant.

Main duties

The main duty is to carry out and lead research within the field at the institute. Central tasks include supervising doctoral students, developing the level of living surveys (LNU), and actively contributing to research funding.

Administrative duties include tasks tied to personnel management within the field at the institute, continuous participation in the institute's management committee, and intermittent management responsibilities for the entire institute.

Teaching duties include active participation within the university's education in sociology at the master's and doctoral student levels, including course responsibility.

Qualification requirements

Qualified to be employed as a professor is a person who has demonstrated both research and teaching proficiency.

Research proficiency is to have been demonstrated through independent research that exceeds to a significant degree the requirements for qualification as an associate professor, both in terms of quality and in terms of quantity. The planning and leading of research are also to be assigned significance.

The teaching proficiency is to have been demonstrated through teaching in first cycle education, second cycle education and third cycle education. Assessment of teaching skills should cover both the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. The teaching proficiency is to be well-documented in a manner which makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities.

The applicant must have the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise needed to perform the duties well.

Assessment criteria

Special emphasis will be paid to research proficiency shown by high-level publications, especially but not only international.

Strong emphasis will be paid to teaching proficiency shown by documented teaching experience at different levels.
Strong emphasis will also be paid to the following.
. Successful research supervision demonstrated through active guidance of at least one PhD student to a completed degree.
. Documented ability to cooperate well with colleagues and fellow researchers.
. Experience of collecting micro data (via interviews or questionnaires) on individuals' living conditions, especially experience of management tasks in such collection.

Emphasis will be paid to administrative proficiency and the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about the work of research and development.

Emphasis will also be paid to successfully having applied for and received research funds for projects from external research funding bodies.

The following is a merit.
. To have completed at least 7.5 higher education credits of higher education in teaching theory or have otherwise acquired the equivalent knowledge.
. Completed research supervisor training.

An applicant who does not have at least 7.5 higher education credits of higher education in teaching theory and research supervisor training, and has not been assessed as otherwise having the corresponding knowledge, must undergo such courses during the first two years of employment.

Understanding Swedish is not a requirement at the time of employment. The applicant should, however, be prepared within a couple of years, to carry out teaching and administration tasks that require knowledge and usage of the Swedish language.
