Dear friends,<br>

I just learned heard that a few days ago, on March 17, my friend and
colleague Tanya Reinhart died. <br>
<br>
For those who do not know this famous linguist from Israel, who had
just started her new job at NYU in New York, after having worked
earlier at Tel Aviv and Utrecht universities, perhaps the most relevant
information is that she was not only a very intelligent and very kind
woman, but especially also an incredibly valiant woman -- actively
engaged against Israeli policies and practices against Palestinians. <br>
<br>
For us in Critical Discourse Studies she is an example, a beacon,
someone who not only is a great linguist, but whose political
commitment was absolute -- including going to jail for her convictions
and actions of resistance.<br>
<br>
She was one of the most admirable women I have ever met. <br>
<br>
And on a more personal note, I fondly remember our dinners in
Amsterdam, with her exceptionally sensitive husband, Aharon Shabtai,
the famous Israeli poet -- similarly critical of Israel's policies --
dinners during which we would talk about politics and poetry and a
million other topics. I am unable to fathom the tremendous feelings of
loss of a poet who wrote so much about love.<br>
