Yesterday his friend and collaborator Luciano Vitacolonna informed
me of the sad news that our colleague János Petöfi had died a few
days ago. <br>
<br>
Whereas others will be able to say more about his life and work of
the last decades, both in Germany as well as in Italy, I am only
entitled to briefly write here about our collaboration of more
than 40 years ago, when János and I, with Jens Ihwe and Hannes
Rieser, started our work in Konstanz and then Bielefeld (Germany)
on what we called Text Grammar. As a mathematician, János imposed
rigor on our approach to the linguistic structures of discourse,
but in many of his publications he showed that such rigor did not
mean a limitation to formulas. He was actively interested in and
contributing to many fields of linguistics, semiotics, discourse
analysis and literary studies. <br>
<br>
Among his many publications I should at least mention his 1971
book on transformational grammars and a co-textual theory of
texts, arguably the first monograph of contemporary discourse
grammars. In his later work he also introduced the relationships
between texts and 'worlds', thus providing first formal semantics
for discourse, years before others would propose to do so. He also
extensively wrote on cohesion and coherence of discourse,
topic-comment, presupposition, metaphor and much more broadly on
the semiotics of discourse and its application in literature and
the arts, often in collaboration with many other scholars in many
countries. Of our joint activities and publications, I would
merely like to mention the foundation of the first journal of
discourse analysis, <i>Text</i> (later <i>Text </i><i>&
Talk</i>) in 1981.<br>
<br>
We all learned immensely from János and we all were impressed by
his very warm and friendly personality, his humor and amused by
his charming hungarian accent in the many languages he spoke. <br>
<br>
Although I had not seen him for many years, I was happy to be able
to assist to the celebration of his 80th birthday two years ago in
Budapest, where also two of the attached pictures were taken (for
the other attached picture of Petöfi I am indebted to Luciano
Vitacolonna).<br>
<br>
I attach a (very incomplete) selection of his publications that
shows the diversity of his work. <br>
