*Potential Job Vacancy: Tenured Assistant Professor of English Linguistics*

The Faculty of Foreign Language, Literature and History (UFR LLCER) at the
University of Paris 8, Vincennes - St. Denis expects to be hiring a junior
lecturer / assistant professor in English Linguistics to begin in September
2020. The research and teaching position is tenure track. It is important
to note that the position has not yet been formally approved but that if a
potential candidate may be interested, there is an important administrative
step (Qualification) that must be taken before the 24th October 2019. The
details are supplied below.

*Keywords:*

Cognitive-Functional Linguistics; contrastive linguistics; Construction
Grammar; corpus linguistics; English language; NLP

*Teaching:*

The person hired will be asked to give classes in both English grammar and
in linguistics at both the bachelor and master levels. The bachelor
syllabus is handled by the Department of English Studies (Département des
études des pays anglophones DEPA) and the master syllabus is currently
handled jointly by the Faculty of Linguistics (UFR SDL) and the Faculty of
Foreign Languages (UFR LLCER). All instruction is English. The candidate
should specialise in functional syntax / Construction Grammar and / or
contrastive linguistics. He/she will also be expected to be able to
integrate corpus linguistic methods and tools into the curriculum.
Administrative responsibilities and curriculum development also constitute
important tasks associated with the position.

*Research:*

The person hired will join the research laboratory TransCrit (EA1569). The
linguistic research axe, LeCSeL specialises in empirical methods with
expertise in Cognitive Linguistics, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis,
experimental phonetics, multivariate statistics, sociolinguistics and
multimodality (https://www.ea-anglais.univ-paris8.fr/spip.php?rubrique355).
His / her work will contribute a formal dimension (constructions and
collocations etc.) to the existing research in semantics and discourse
(gesture, stance etc.) and social variation (gender, ethnicity etc.). For
these reasons, the research team is seeking someone with not only training
in functional syntax / constructions but with skills in corpus linguistics
and / or NLP. Specifically, skills that will help the team tag written and
oral corpora under development are desired. It is essential that the
candidate will be willing to develop interdisciplinary projects with
researchers in phonetics, translation, literature and history. Naturally,
it is equally important that the candidate be active in research,
publishing regularly in high impact avenues.

*Qualification*

The call is only made before the formal announcement of the position to
make sure potential candidates fulfil the requirements for application. In
the French system, most candidates are required to apply for
"qualification" in October to enable applications for positions in May. If
you do not apply for the qualification in the autumn, you cannot apply for
positions when they are announced in the spring.

The deadline for beginning the process of qualification is the *24 October*:

French qualification process, contact us and we may be able to help.
