7. - 11.6. 1999
Centre for Applied Language Studies
University of Jyväskylä, FINLAND

LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY

What is the relationship between language and identity? How are national,
cultural and ethnic identities constructed through the use of language in
various contexts? How are institutional and professional identities
constructed? What kind of methods can be applied to study the relationship
between language and identity? How can this relationship be taken into
account in teaching? These are some of the questions that will be discussed
in the Summer School. The aim of the School is to bring together recent
research as well as to provide insights for researchers, teachers and
students alike.

The invited speakers are Claire Kramsch from California, Srikant Sarangi
from Wales, Ruth Wodak from Vienna and Genevieve Zarate from Paris. Talks
will also be given by Finnish experts. The programme consists of lectures
and workshops. During the week the participants will have an opportunity to
discuss their own research or teaching methods. A detailed programme of the
Summer school will be available in April.
