My name is Elwood Mott. I am a sometime Ph.D. Candidate in Linguistics
at the University of Hawaii. I have recently begun looking at discourse
analysis as a means to get at meaningful linguistic information
(ambiguity intentional). I do most of my work on Chinese, originally
Hakka, now Dongbei mandarin.

I have been lurking on this list for a couple of weeks. It is apparent
that some members are responding privately while others respond to the
list, leaving us lurkers looking at one-half of the conversation; which
is disconcerting when the conversation looks interesting. It's a bit
like hearing footsteps in the hall, but nobody passes the door.
