Hello, DISCOURS-ers. I'm looking forward to participating in this
list. By way of introduction my name is Kathleen Ferrara. I'm an
Associate Professor of Linguistics at Texas A&M University in College
Station, Texas. My PH.D. in Linguistics is from the University of Texas at
Austin, where I completed a dissertation on therapeutic discourse. An
expanded and revised version was published as the book Therapeutic Ways
with Words by Oxford University Press (1994). I have been interested in
discourse organization and discourse features for many years. I enjoy all
aspects of examining discourse and have occupied some of my time by looking
specifically at discourse in institutional settings (including medicine,
psychotherapy, and law) and at narrative organization and narrative
features such as the quotative system, digression management techniques,
narrative ending strategies. I'm presently working on a book on framing
aspects of narrative. I hope to investigate many more aspects of
intonation and its relationship with discourse in the future.
