In the interests of promoting dialogue across interdisciplinary
boundaries, after reading this message please introduce yourself with an
initial
posting to the list (with the subject heading "Introduction") describing
your academic background, present position, and research projects, as
well as other relevant details.

1. Hi there, my name is Wannie Carstens. I am a professor of Afrikaans
linguistics at Potchefstroom University in South Africa. My main
interest regarding the broad field of discourse is text linguistics,
especially the model followed by De Beaugrande and Dressler 1981. I
used this model as background for a book on Afrikaans text linguistics
(Afrikaanse tekslinguistiek. 'n Inleiding (in English: Afrikaans
text linguistics. An Introduction); 1997) and to a fair extent this
reflects my opinions and thoughts about text and discourse study. If
you are able to understand some Dutch you should be more than able to
understand Afrikaans too - so feel free to ask for more details on this
publication...

I also had the priviledge of visiting Turku, Finland in 1994 to attend a
conference ("ORGANIZATION IN DISCOURSE") organized by the Dept. of
English of the University of Turku and met some nice people there. I
wonder when will we have the next one? Sanna-Kaisa - I hope you will
read this!

2. Presently a few local (SA) universities are thinking about working
on a broad research topic around "Text and discourse study in
education". Personally I would like to work on how knowledge of text
linguistics will help teachers to become better grammar teachers or of
linguistics in general.

3. Maybe I could also tell you about the PALA (Poetics and Linguistics
Association) conference for 1999 that will be held in April 1999 at
Potchefstroom. If you would like to get more details I can forward the
original invitation to you.

4. If someone could maybe help me with the e-mail address of Prof.
Colleen Donnelly (author of the very well written book Linguistics for
Writers; 1994; State University of New York Press) I will really
appreciate it.

This list seems a very good idea and I am looking forward to some nice
discussions.
