(This Call for Papers is on Behalf of a Colleague)

International Symposium on Lyric Poetry
(8-10 March 2001, Faculty of Letters, Manouba, Tunis)
(Papers in Honour of Professor Anwar Attia)

Call for Papers
Since New Criticism at least, lyric poetry has been the principal focus of
interpretive theory. Readings have been done in the name of Marxism,
psychoanalysis, formalism, semiotics, structuralism, deconstruction,
feminism, and recently postcolonial and postmodern theories. That such
critical interest has persisted despite serious theoretical disagreements
about the nature of the lyric obviously testifies to its impressive
vitality. Yet, this vitality is not without perplexity, for nearly every
recent major reading has been a "defense of poetry." The symposium aims
essentially at taking stock of recent critical approaches, and will,
therefore, show some preference for papers of "practical criticism." The
papers may be on poems and poets in the English, French and Arabic literary
traditions, and presented in the languages thereof.

Abstracts
The deadline for paper proposals is 15 January 2001. The proposal should
include: (i) the author's name, affiliation, full snail-address,
telephone/fax, e-mail address; (ii) the title of the
submission; (iii) a 200-word abstract, which, for practical reasons, must be
sent in electronic form within the body of the e-mail to the Conference
Organiser's e-mail address: (mounirkhe at yahoo.com).
