From Gulf to Gulf

There *are* op-ed articles, in the mainstream US press, that discuss biased reporting and images, as well as the race and class issues. Yes, some of the resporting has been biased, but I don't think it's particularly productive to ignore the articles and op-eds that are coming out that put race and class front-and-center, and that are extremely critical of the gov't's handling of this emergency. The US media's criticiam of the government is stronger than it has been in years, and the issue of US poverty has been more in the news more in the last few days than at any time that I can remember. Given that this is the critical discourse analysis list, it goes without saying that all of us believe in the importance of examining and speaking out against media accounts that reinforce relations of inequality and injustics. However, I think it's important to acknowledge the full range of reporting on this event, and it's also worth keeping in mind that what we know about this event, m
ost of us know from media (including blog) reporting, which means that it's out there. For anyone who's interested, here are some articles from the New York Times and Washington Post from the past few days.
