Sociolinguistics Symposium 2014, 1st call for proposals
Sociolinguistics Symposium 20
June 15-18, 2014 Jyväskylä, Finland

FIRST CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The 20th Sociolinguistics Symposium will be held on June 15-18 at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Since 1970s Sociolinguistics Symposia have brought together sociolinguists and discourse researchers interested in investigating and theorizing issues concerning language in society. Attracting hundreds of participants and exhibitors, the Symposium is also a stimulating space for networking. We warmly welcome you to discuss fundamental issues in sociolinguistics and discourse studies, and not only to rethink our present understanding of these disciplines but also to imagine their future frontiers.

The conference theme for SS20 is language/time/space. With this theme, we seek to encourage proposals addressing connectivity and trajectories of language resources in time and space; how language practices change, vary and alternate in their different geographical, social and political contexts; and how they come together in different nexuses emerging from what can be called 'rhizomatic' circulations. We welcome contributions on topics in sociolinguistics and discourse studies within the following themes:

Theoretical openings
Methodological innovations
Language and mobility
Language and economy
Language and work
Language and affect
Language and gender
Language and class
Language as social action
Language variation and change
Language, identity and community
Language ideologies
Language planning and policies
Transcending discourse studies
Discourse and social engagement
Sociolinguistics of language education
Bi/multilingualism
Multiliteracies
Multimodality and visuality
Translating, interpreting and mediation
Sociolinguistics next?

PROPOSALS
The three categories of proposals are: (1) individual papers, (2) posters, (3) colloquia.

Individual papers: Papers are formal presentations on original research by one or more authors, lasting a total of 20 minutes (15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for discussion). Please note that the time limit will be strictly adhered to.

Posters: Poster sessions are for displaying research that offer the opportunity for individualized, informal discussion of the research. Posters are especially effective for presenting work-in-progress, fieldwork and results of empirical research if data can be presented visually (e.g. charts, graphs, tables). A block of time will be designated when presenters are available to discuss their posters. In addition, the posters will be available online in a virtual poster exhibition for viewing and commenting throughout the duration of the conference (for conference participants only).

Colloquia: Colloquia allow for extended discussion on a particular topic with a cluster of several independent papers and a joint discussion. Colloquia are presented in a time block of 2 or 4 hours and the colloquium organizer(s) will decide upon the allocation of this time between the introduction, individual papers and the discussion. It is assumed that colloquia organizer(s) will have contacted and tentatively invited potential contributors, including a potential discussant, in advance.

SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS
Submission of proposals for papers, posters, and colloquia opens in August 2013. The proposals will be submitted via an online author submission management system. Please consult the conference website at (https://www.jyu.fi/en/congress/ss20/abstracts) for more information.

EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS
Proposals for individual papers, posters, and colloquia will be evaluated by the SS20 scientific committee and the organizing committee in terms of quality of content, significance, originality, thematic relevance, and presentation.
