Olsson of the <i style="">Forensic Linguistics
Institute</i>, is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified
applicant for a Collaborative
doctoral studentship for three years commencing on 1 October
2011.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="font-family: Cambria;"
lang="EN-US">The overall theme of this collaborative programme
is, </span><i style=""><span style="font-family: Cambria;
color: black;" lang="EN-US">"Language
variation in electronic messaging: Stylistic parameters that
make a 'linguistic
fingerprint' problematic."<span style=""> </span></span></i><span
style="font-family: Cambria;" lang="EN-US">It </span><span
style="font-family: Cambria;" lang="EN-US">involves identifying
how a person's 'tell' [i.e., telling linguistic features that
can reveal who
the speaker/ author is] can vary across contexts in general, and
electronic
communications in particular. This study is of direct relevance
to the field of
forensic linguistics where much work involves authorship
attribution. While the
bulk of this work will be in the medium of English, two
additional, pilots will
also be conducted in German and Welsh, to offer this project a
cross-cultural
dimension; and the </span><span style="font-family: Cambria;"
lang="EN-US">methods to be used include qualitative, discourse
analysis.

Award Scheme, the successful applicant will benefit from

<p class="MsoNormal"><b style=""><span style="font-family: Cambria;">Eligibility</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 3pt;"><span
style="font-family: Cambria;">Applicants
should hold a distinguished academic record, which will include
a first class
Bachelor degree (in linguistics or language analysis) and may
include a
Master’s degree (or equivalent) or relevant professional
experience.<span style=""> </span>Applicants must have a
native or
near-native command of English, and a native or near-native
command of either
German or Welsh as well as a willingness to become sufficiently
proficient in
the other language to conduct research into that language.
Furthermore, the
candidate will be able to evidence some measure of academic
expertise in (a) sociolinguistics
/ variation studies, and (b) forensic linguistics.<span style="">
</span>Additional desirable criteria include a working knowledge
of
the Welsh & English legal system, and some experience in </span><span
style="font-family: Cambria;" lang="EN-US">qualitative,

Doctoral students who qualify for the full AHRC studentship will

tuition fees paid for and will receive a stipend of £13,590 p.a.
