Hi everyone:

The Spencer Fellows at GSE at the University of Pennsylvania are hosting a
symposium in the spring. The broad theme of the symposium is "Educational
Spaces: Extending the Map of Learning". In the past, the symposium has
focused mainly on issues of school reform and urban education. This year, I
think it would be really great to have several papers about the importance of
language in education at the symposium.  Please find the complete call below;
however, if you have any questions, feel free to email me at
warholt at dolphin.upenn.edu.

"Educational Spaces: Extending the Map of Learning"

CALL FOR PAPERS

What does education look like?
Where does education occur?
What is its purpose and process in different spaces?
Who does it serve?

The Spencer Fellows at Penn’s Graduate School of Education invite students,
faculty and practitioners to discuss urban research as it shed lights on the
different contexts and relationships, formal and informal, in which education
occurs. By extending the conversation beyond the traditional classroom to
alternative learning spaces, we can inform educational policy and practice in
new and transformative ways. Student papers from across disciplines will
serve as starting points for dialogue.

Spencer Fellows are requesting papers in educational research that cut across
the United States and international contexts in the areas of:

1. Youth Culture
2. Community, Neighborhood, Family
3. Schools
4. Media & Technology
5. Non-profit and/or faith-based organizations

Please submit a 1-2 page abstract of a 10-20 page paper by January 16, 2004 to
spenfel at gse.upenn.edu.

Completed papers must be submitted by February 21, 2004.
