Hi Everyone: Daryl Gordon, an alum of the EdLx program, is requesting some help
with bibliography for AAVE, identity & ESL learners. Please see the message
below for more specifics. (Despite the message, I am not the one who wrote her
dissertation on AAVE, so I could not really help her.) I think she would
appreciate any help you can give. Thanks, Tamara

Dear Tamara,

Hope all's well with you. I was thinking of you the other day when I was
talking to John Pell, a student in my TESOL methodology class. He's
interested in AAVE resources and some of the identity issues involved in ESL
learners being exposed to and learning more about AAVE. We read Ibrahaim's
article, "Becoming Black: Rap and Hip-Hop, Race, Gender, Identity and the
Politics of ESL Learning" in the 1999 TQ and it sparked conversation about
the prospect for AAVE as a target for ESL learners. I know that your
dissertation research touched on AAVE and I suggested that you might be a
good source for readings on this topic. I'm aware of Labov's work with BVE,
but haven't really followed this research. Can you give John (and me) some
ideas for readings in this area? Maybe a portion of your dissertation
bibliography?

I'm cc'ing John on this email, as well, so he can follow-up with any more
specific questions he has about this.

All best,

Daryl
