ACTFL - Cemanahuac Educational Community Scholarship

The Cemanahuac Educational Community, located in Cuernavaca, Mexico will provide
one scholarship to be awarded to a member of ACTFL for two weeks of Spanish
language study at any time during 2005. The scholarship includes registration,
two weeks of tuition, housing (double occupancy), all meals, one field study
trip, and a certificate of participation. This scholarship has a value of about
$860 US. The scholarship winner is responsible for all travel to Mexico and
Cuernavaca, textbooks, all personal and incidental expenses, as well as for fees
for any additional activities or study in Mexico. Visit the website above for

received at ACTFL by January 7, 2005. A committee appointed by the President of
ACTFL will review the applications, and the selection will be announced in March
2005.

Concordia Language Villages Teacher Seminar Scholarships

The Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages offers a
partial scholarship to eligible members for the 2005 Concordia Language Villages
Teacher Seminars. This $600 scholarship will be awarded to a second language
educator, including college educators with an interest in K -12 second language
methodologies. The recipient will attend one of the Concordia Language Villages
Teacher Seminars offered during July and August in 2004, at the permanent site
of the Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota. The philosophy of immersion language
instruction and how it can be applied to the K-12 language classroom is the
focus of this graduate level course. After an introduction to immersion teaching
principles and their application to the language classroom, participants visit
the Villages to see the methods in action. After completing this experience, the
recipient will present a session at the 2005 Central States Conference sharing
ideas gained from the experience.

Chaplin Memorial Award for excellence in Japanese language teaching

The Hamako Ito Chaplin Memorial Award, administered through the Association for
Asian Studies, will again be conferred in 2005. Each year a prize of $1000 is
awarded to either a current graduate student or a full-time instructor of
Japanese for excellence in Japanese language teaching. Possible academic fields
of specialization are Japanese language pedagogy, linguistics, anthropology, or
literature. Individuals interested in applying for the award or nominating a

National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week: A Mini Grant for Latin Teachers

Latin teachers (K-college) in the US and Canada are eligible for mini-grants of
up to $200 each to support efforts at the local level designed to encourage
students to consider a career as a Latin teacher. This grant is in part a
movement to support National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week, which is March
2005. Proposal for grants will be evaluated as they are received and competition
remains open until funds are depleted. A brief report on the activity will be

Alliance of Associations of Teachers of Japanese - Professional Development Grants

The Alliance of Associations of Teachers of Japanese has established a fund for
the purpose of helping teachers who are members of the Association of Teachers
of Japanese (ATJ) or the National Council of Japanese Language Teachers take
advantage of professional development and in-service training opportunities. A
limited number of grants are available to individual teachers for a minimum of
$50 and a maximum of $600. Funding may be used to cover workshop or conference
attendance, as payment of substitute teachers during the time the applicant is
participating in the activity, to develop curriculum, give a presentation,
conduct action research, etc. Applications must be submitted at least one month

The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations

Grants will be made to innovative professional development programs that
strengthen teachers and their teaching in grades 9-12. Special consideration
will be given to projects in their early stages that address the concerns and
problems of secondary education on a national level. Sustained partnerships
between the faculties of colleges (e.g., arts and sciences and education) and
school districts or collaborative efforts involving reform organizations,
colleges/universities and high schools are encouraged. Proposals may cover a
wide range of initiatives intended to improve teaching. For example, projects
might be designed to improve professional development for in-service and
pre-service teachers, strengthen faculty/teaching skills, support practical
research in teacher and high school education, etc. Eligible institutions
include, but are not limited to, public and private universities and colleges,
graduate schools of education and free-standing educational research institutes.
Grants will range from $100,000 to $150,000.
