Call for Papers

Bi- and multilingual Universities: Challenges and Future Prospects

The Conference sessions will take place on Friday, September 2, 2005 and
on Saturday, September 3, 2005. We welcome proposals for papers related to
an aspect of the 3 themes:

1. Multilingual higher education
2. The cultural, political and historical context
3. Multilingualism at the universities in practice

Suggested topics related to these themes include:

*Future scenarios for multilingual higher education
*How can the university help students from both language groups to become
bilingual
*The impact of new technologies on multilingual instruction - challenges
and future prospects
*Language, culture and higher education in multilingual indigenous
societies
*English - threat or opportunity
*Key cultural, political and historical features impacting on multilingual
higher education
*Examples of good practice from bi- and multilingual universities
*Minorities and higher education
*New language policies supporting multilingual higher education
How can bi-and multilingual higher education be used as a marketing asset
*What is the impact of bilingualism/bilingual education on cognitive
development
*The impact of the Bologna process and Joint degrees on multilingual
higher education
*What are the impacts of globalisation, nationalism and the flow of
immigrants and refugees on multilingual higher education
*Does the EU have a long-term policy to promote multilingualism in Europe
*Minority language rights - theory and practice
*How much is second language acquisition different from first language
acquisition
*The impact of multilingual higher education on students and teachers
*Linguistic diversity and language rights
*What kind of university administration supports bilingual education in
the best way
*The role of the language Center in promoting bilingual education
*Engelskan och de nordiska språken vid universiteten

The presentations are limited to 15 - 20 minutes in the sessions and an
abstract of approximately 200 words should be submitted by May 30, 2005
together with any special requests for audio-visual requirements.

Papers should be submitted to Caesar.Paterlini at helsinki.fi as an email
attachment readable in Microsoft Word (e.g. in DOC or RTF format).
