International Leadership Conference

"Literacy & Leadership: International Practices, Lessons, and Directions"

Penn Center for Educational Leadership

Featured at the conference will be Neal Pitches and Sue Watson from New
Zealand who will present an overview of effective practice and conduct a
workshop session on the "Literacy Leader".  The Penn Literacy Network (PLN)
will highlight the work of their program, and with Irish Educators, present an
overview their early childhood efforts in Ireland.  The Consortium for Policy
Research in Education (CPRE) will describe their national efforts in studying
literacy programs and comprehensive school reform.  Cornerstone will feature
Kevin Collins, Director of Primary Education for the United Kingdom who is
responsible for literacy strategies for U.K. schools. A panel of Philadelphia
Writing Project administrators will provide a presentation on practices of
teachers who lead from the classroom, within and across urban schools, to
foster teacher and student learning. Distinguished PennGSE faculty will
present sessions that address accountability, assessment, ESL, adolescent
literacy, and their extensive national and international efforts to improve
literacy practices.  An international panel will discuss important directions
for research and practice for the future.

The conference will kick off on Wednesday, October 6th with Continental
Breakfast and On-Site Registration at 8 a.m. at the Sheraton University City
Hotel, 3549 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia.  A wine and cheese reception
sponsored by Pacific Learning*, A & B Educational Enterprises, John Marshall,
and Kelley Spotz will take place on Wednesday afternoon.
