Identifying heritage learners:
Perspectives from the foreign language classroom

by

Director, Penn Language Center

When: Wednesday, April 13, 2005 from 12-1:30pm
Where: The Graduate School of Education, Rm. 400

Abstract: According to the most recent MLA survey, university students are
pursuing a wider variety of foreign languages and enrollments show greater
increases in the less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) than in the traditional,
European languages (cf. Welles 2004). This trend is due in part to the large
numbers of heritage learners who enroll in foreign language classes to improve
their language skills and to reconnect with the culture of their parents or
grandparents. I will discuss the implications of this shift for foreign
language instruction from the perspectives of both teachers and learners.
