Hi Michael,

My name is akira. I know some sources on Japanese SLA studies (and
bilingualism) so I will list some below (not exactly what you're looking for
but some related ones).

Noguchi, M. G., & Fotos, S. (2001). Studies in Japanese bilingualism.
Clevedon England ; Buffalo: Multilingual Matters Ltd.

Sugimoto, Y. (2003). An introduction to Japanese society (2nd ed.).
Cambridge, UK ; New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.

Thornton, P., & Houser, C. (2005). Using mobile phones in English education
in Japan. Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, 21(3), 217-228.

Gary, F. (2005). The cline of errors in the writing of Japanese university
students. World Englishes, 24(3), 371-382.

Koiso, H., Horiuchi, Y., Tutiya, S., Ichikawa, A., & Den, Y. (1998). An
Analysis of Turn-Taking and Backchannels Based on Prosodic and Syntactic
Features in Japanese Map Task Dialogs. Language & Speech, 41(3/4), 295-321.

White, S. (1989). Backchannels across cultures: A study of Americans and
Japanese. Language in Society, 18: 59-76.

Also, "Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development" has published
a special issue titled "Multilingual Japan" under Vol 16: 1&2, 1995.

True... there aren't many studies done around Japanese students' oral skills
(more on writing). Hope this helps

Akira Kondo
