Parents of Speech-Delayed Children Turn to University Preschools

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Speech and language delays affect approximately 5 to 8 percent 
of preschool-age children. Parents, often confused by a child’s slow language 
development, are starting to look for preschools in places that typically 
serve much older students: universities. The University of Missouri-Columbia 
and several other universities around the nation now offer special preschools 
to help children develop speech, language and social skills. The preschools 
also benefit university students learning to be speech-language pathologists.
