Seventy-five Nigerian teachers will go to Japan next year to receive
training in various disciplines that would contribute to the educational
development of Nigeria.

Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria Akio Tanaka said yesterday in Abuja, the
capital, that Nigerian teachers will go to Japan to learn Japanese so
they can teach the language to Nigerians students.

"Nigerian teachers will understand the Japanese language for teaching it
to Nigerians and they will be well trained before returning to Nigeria,"
he said.

The Japanese ambassador said he was in Nigeria to increase the scope of
Japan's cooperation towards education in the country, and he promised to
send an expert to develop mathematics education in Nigeria.

Minister of Education Dr. Obiagele Ezekwesili said Japan's interest in
developing the educational sector in Nigeria was in line with the
government's plans for reform in the schools.

"Japan is a country we are proud of, on how they have tackled
challenges. They have a work ethic and place the value of hard work
above other things, and that is what we have lost in Nigeria,"
Ezikwesili stressed.

The minister said under the plan, 140,000 teachers would be trained and
send to rural areas in Nigeria, while about 140,000 teachers would
benefit from an in-service training annually.
